ToggleA natural bioactive polyphenol in the Mediterranean diet
Behind the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet, many scientists have focused on a highly active natural polyphenol—hydroxytyrosol. It is one of the principal phenolic compounds in olive fruit and olive oil. Because it demonstrates exceptionally strong free-radical-scavenging ability, anti-inflammatory properties, and multiple cellular protective functions in the body, it has been recognized by the European Food Safety Authority as a health-related substance that “protects low-density lipoprotein from oxidative damage.”
Outstanding antioxidant capacity
Hydroxytyrosol’s antioxidant capacity is particularly prominent among natural polyphenols. Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity tests indicate that its free-radical-scavenging potency is far greater than that of common antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and resveratrol. This is attributed to its unique catechol structure, which can efficiently neutralize various reactive oxygen species, chelate metal ions, and interrupt the amplification of oxidative chain reactions. More importantly, hydroxytyrosol has high bioavailability, can cross cell membranes and enter tissues, and some of its metabolites retain antioxidant activity, making its protective effects in the body more persistent.
Anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular protective value
The health value of this olive-derived essence is not limited to antioxidant activity. Research shows that hydroxytyrosol can inhibit the nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway and downregulate the expression of pro-inflammatory factors such as tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6, thereby exerting broad anti-inflammatory effects and positively influencing chronic inflammation-related diseases such as atherosclerosis and arthritis. In cardiovascular protection, it not only protects low-density lipoprotein from oxidation—an early key event in plaque formation—but may also improve endothelial function and inhibit abnormal platelet aggregation, jointly reducing the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events.
Research on metabolism, brain function, and exercise recovery
Hydroxytyrosol is also noteworthy for people concerned about metabolic health and brain function. Multiple animal studies and preliminary human studies have found that it may help improve insulin sensitivity, reduce hepatic fat accumulation, suppress excessive microglial activation in the central nervous system, and reduce neuroinflammation, potentially slowing the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Some research in exercise recovery also suggests that hydroxytyrosol may support post-exercise recovery by reducing oxidative stress and minor muscle damage.
Dietary sources and standardized supplementation
The primary dietary source of hydroxytyrosol is extra-virgin olive oil. Early-harvested, cold-pressed, high-phenolic olive oils often have a noticeable pungency and bitterness, which reflect the flavor contribution of phenolic substances such as hydroxytyrosol. Table olives and olive-leaf extracts can also provide certain amounts. However, content in the daily diet varies greatly with origin, cultivar, and processing.
